UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH

HEATH HARRIS

How long have you been involved in horses?  Half a Century!!

Do you specialise in any one equine discipline?

Liberty horse, Live Show and Movie Horse training is what I make my living from, however it is not a discipline. My passion is dressage training.

How many staff do you have on board?

My wife Krissy & I do the bulk of the work, and we have 2 working pupils.

How did you become involved in the film/television industry?

I had a riding school at Ingleside 40 years ago and one day someone wanted to use my horses for a commercial - it all went from there.

What are some of the movies that you have  been involved with?

Man From Snowy River, Phar Lap and Breaker Morant are the early ones, and the most recent ones are Young Black Stallion, Racing Stripes and The Legend of Zorro.

Do you have any memorable moments whilst on set that you can share with us?

   No - it's all a blur!!

Your work has taken you to many places around  the world - do you have   a favourite?

Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and I loved   Spain and Mexico.
Have you ever trained  any other animals    besides horses?

I've trained zebras, snakes, birds, cows, wombats, kangaroos, pigs, sheep, goats, camels and chooks - a bit like Noah's ark, however, I've  never had any success training women!!

Are you involved in any charities?
Every rider in Australia should support Care Flight - they offer a fabulous service. I also support Free the Bears - and have an interest in the HEF Foundation, which was founded by Drs Alex Tinson, Gus MacKinnon and myself to try and save endangered species by embryo transplant into suitable surrogates.

Career Highlight

My second marriage (I think).

Do you have a     favourite horse/s       (either from your own stable or from a film)?

Spike - one of my team of black liberty horses. He is a stunning Warmblood by Lutz.
So what's next for Heath Harris?

To consolidate and continue to pass on my knowledge in the Liberty Horse Master Classes and the Trick Riding Schools. I am also looking forward to working with some good jumping and dressage horses.

What horse sport do you specialise in?  Hacking/Showing/Dressage
How many years have you been involved with  horses?

All my life!   I got my first pony when I was 3 and   living in the U.K.   I started showing at around the age of 10 and competed in the "Prince Phillip Cup" at the Wembley Horse of the Year Show at the age of 13.  Also, I always loved show jumping, and competed in Junior show jumping events until I came to live in Australia in 1976.

What time do you start/finish your day?

I usually start at around 7am, and finish up at about 6pm.  Of course, if we are preparing for a show, we can still  be working until around 9pm.  On the day of the show, we are usually up and away by 6am.

How many horses   do you have in work?  At the moment I have 12 horses, with 8 in work and show preparation.

Do you have any employees/help?

I have a young up and coming rider, Brad who lives on my property (in the Hawkesbury District, NSW) and works with me full time.  Also there is Allison, who has been turning out my horses for the past 20yrs.  I must say, they both do a wonderful job and I'd be lost without the two of them!

Do you have any sponsors?

Yes!  I am proudly sponsored by "Lazor Lights" shampoo, which produces my horses with beautiful glossy coats, and also "Multi Block", which provides my horses with all their mineral needs.

What are some of your recent major show    wins?

Well where do I start!   I've had a great year with all my horses, but especially the purebred Arabian stallion "Kepeka Exquisite Makee" (Standing at Stud - Click photo right for more details) and of course my number 1 star " Brettony Park What-eva" (Tiny).  "Haggis" won, for the second year in a row, Supreme Champion at Canberra Royal and again at Bathurst Royal and Supreme ridden at the East Coast Champs. and Champion at "State".  But of course, my own horse "Tiny", who is a striking 17.2hh black Thoroughbred and was recently (October 2005) awarded the "Runner-up Large Hack of the Year" at the Show Horse Council HOTY show, which was a wonderful thrill.

Career Highlights

I've had a wonderfully successful career which has included me winning my individual rider class over 20 times (including Champion and Reserves) at Royal Shows all around Australia.  All of the horses I have shown have been Royal winners (including champions/reserves) and place getters.

 Next big competition

I have the N.S.W. Arabian Nationals coming up, but again I will be looking forward to Canberra and Sydney Royals and also the Grand National for myself and "Tiny".

Favourite horse/horses

I"ve had many favourites: "Ice Review", "Willowcroft Millbrook" and "Shall We Dance", but I think "Brettony Park What-eva" (Tiny)  would have to be at the top of my list, because I have won so much with him and he is my own horse!

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH CHRISTINE JOHNSON

                                      OF "TEAM JOHNSON"

What sport do you specialise in?

Showjumping now, but I train riders and horses in all disciplines. I was a very keen eventing rider when I was younger. I also managed and operated my own Racehorse training Business “Neumont Park Racing Ltd.” in the Hawkesbury region for over 15 years (1977 - 1993). I've held my Thoroughbred Trainers Licence in NSW and in Victoria. I taught for 5 years in Victoria at Marcus Oldham College. I have also been the Coordinator for the Riding For The Disabled in Kellyville and I was the NSW State Coaching Coordinator for the EFA for 12 months. So I'm interested in all aspects of t he horse industry.

Is your family also involved in the horse industry and who makes up Team Johnson?

Yes, it is a family operated business. My two children George and Alice are both a great help to me and both are excellent riders and horse handlers. My parents are also great supporters. Team Johnson really refers to the fabulous group of people who train with us and support us. From our students and their families, to our farriers and vets and everyone in between. They are all what make this such a great business to be in.

What time do you start/finish your day?

We feed up at 7am and go until dark (or later), and then there's the indoor work- phone calls, emails and bookwork.

How many horses do you have in work?   We have twenty horses here. A combination of our competition horses and clients horses.
How many pupils do you teach and what are you teaching qualifications?

I'm a Level 2 NCAS Coach. I am also a Coach Educator and Assessor, which means I can train and assess other coaches. My son George is a Level 1 NCAS Coach. Between us we give an average of 20 private lessons a week. I also Coach once a month at The Kellyville Riding Club, and the Under 21s Showjumping Club.  I am a member of the NSW Pony Club Associations Paid Instructors Panel and I travel to give clinics. Last December I spent a week in Malaysia, training Coaches.
